Toyon’s Marine Observer will be presenting recent research via a poster session at the Society for Marine Mammalogy (SMM) 2024 Conference in Perth, Australia.

The research to be presented was gathered by Marine Observer along with its partner LGL Limited, and with funding partners Hibernia, Equinor, and Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), and support by Energy Research and Innovation Newfoundland and Labrador (ERINL).

SMM holds a biennial conference every two years to “promote science, collaboration, and improve the quality of research on marine mammals around the globe.” The 25th Biennial Conference will be held in Perth, Western Australia at the Perth Exhibition and Convention Centre from November 11 to 15, 2024.

You can find Marine Observer’s Chief Biologist, Christina Tombach Wright, presenting the scientific poster entitled “Visual marine mammal detection is improved by using infrared technology” at the Conservation and Management poster session scheduled for Tuesday, November 12 and Thursday, November 14, 2024 in Pavilion 1 & 2 from 5:30 – 7:00 pm.

“I look forward to representing the Marine Observer team, along with our partners, as I share our research on the use of the Marine Observer infrared-camera system to detect marine mammals. The data presented was collected by Marine Observer during three separate vessel deployments in 2022 and the results show real promise for the future use of IR cameras for mitigation and research in operational settings”, said Tombach Wright.
